On A Mission

There are Mondays on the mission field.  Sick days.  Days when you simply have so much to do that you don't want to get out of bed.  In fact, you are living a mission right now, whether you know it or not.

We are told in 2 Corinthians 5:18-20: "All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them.  And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.  We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.  We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God."

What does this mean for us?  It means that everywhere we go, we are walking into a mission field.  You've probably heard this before, but I challenge you to truly think about it.  For those of you who have been on a mission trip, you know that some of the most rewarding work, and perhaps your favorite work, is the most challenging.  Why do we not view our lives the same way, then?

When we are forced to stand in a long line because of a slow grocer, why do we not look at it as a chance to show patience and set ourselves apart?  Why do we not see it as a chance to add a spark of light to the grocer's day, believing that she is just as human as we are?  What about especially challenging people?  Why do we not see our chance to minister to them through our attitude, loving them despite their faults?

When we claim Christ as our Father, we represent Him through our every action.  When we become aware of this, the world opens up before us.  The challenges we face are no longer meaningless struggles, they are a chance to reach into the hearts of others around us and share with them the love of Christ that has so transformed us.
