Unimaginably Mine

"losing through you what seemed myself, I find selves unimaginably mine." -ee cummings

"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness." -Ephesians 4:22-24

While reading some poetry yesterday, I stumbled across the above quote from EE Cummings and felt that it really put into words my feelings about becoming "Christ-like."

There seems to be this unconscious fear that I have that somehow in being a Christian, I am going to miss out on some sort of fun.  It's a foolish fear, but one that I believe many of us unconsciously hang on to.  We try to push the boundaries of what it means to be pure, modest, or good.  We ask how far can we go before we cross the line.  Perhaps we fear "losing ourselves."

But the truth about becoming "Christ-like" is that we only find ourselves when we find ourselves in God.  Following God's intentions for our lives means that we choose to lead the life we were created to live.  In doing so, we are able to shed the lies that our broken world has taught us to believe.

We see ourselves as beautiful and lovable.  When we come across the lonely and the hurting, we believe that we have an answer.  We find ourselves anchored on a truth that doesn't move with the changing fashions and isn't shaken by a mid-life crisis.

When we lose through Christ what seemed ourself, we find selves unimaginably ours.
